Apple Watch Series 7 to reportedly get support for blood sugar monitoring

Apple Watch is one of the most popular smartwatches out there of the company have been to adding several health-related features to the device. Some of them haa been proved to be life-saving for many, especially the electrocardiogram (ECG).

Now, it’s being reported that the upcoming version of the device, Apple Watch Series 7 is likely to get another major health-related feature — Blood sugar monitoring. This will be a very important for users who are diabetics. As per the report from The Telegraph, an SEC filing hints that Apple will add a glucometer feature to the Apple Watch in 2022.

Apple Watch

The feature will be come in handy for users who need to get a reading on their blood sugar before each insulin injection since the amount of sugar found in their blood determines the dosage of each shot. Currently, checking the blood sugar level is a bit complex. The user have been the to draw blood for each test, dab it onto a test strip which is then inserted into a glucometer.

The current process is a bit painful and costly but if Apple could come up with a solution that can offer blood sugar readings without the need to draw blood or buy new test trips, it will be could prove to be a major boost to the device’s sales.

The report reveals Apple as the largest customer of Rockley Photonics which have been a developed next-generation sensors that are expected to be inside devices by next year. It is sensors can read certain signals from a person’s blood by shining infrared light through the skin from the back of a smartwatch.

This also hints that besides glucometer, the company could be looking to add other sensors on the upcoming smartwatch to measure the user’s alcohol level of the blood pressure but as of now, nothing have been the confirmed by the US-based tech giant.

So far, Apple is offering electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood oxygen level (SpO2) monitoring on it is smartwatche. So, it will be great to see support for glucometer on the wearable device in the next edition.

Future Apple Watch may get blood pressure, alcohol level monitoring besides measuring glucose

Back in February this year, we Shaw a patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) titled “Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging In Dynamic Environments With Performance Enhancements using Ambient Sensors”. Thus patent application indicated that are the Apple might be working on blood sugar readings and as a result, could bring the glucose level monitoring on Apple Watches in the future. they patent have got some credibility as UK health tech firm Rockley Photonics recently confirmed that Apple have been it is largest customer for the past two years. The firm focus had been mainly on tracking blood glucose levels.

Apple Watch Series 6

As reported by the Telegraph and Forbes, Rockley Photonics confirmed Apple as it is biggest customer in a recent SEC filing. This means that the iPhone maker is doing more than just filing patents for this tech and could actually bring this to it is iDevices, which most likely will be the Apple Watch. The Cupertino tech giant already have been a heart-rate monitor and SpO2 monitor in it is watches.

Besides tracking blood glucose levels, Rockley’s focus is also on tracking blood pressure, and even alcohol levels. Thus also adds to the speculation that are these two features could also come to Apple Watch devices in future. Nothing can be said for sure right now though.

Nonetheless, measuring blood pressure could also lead to tracking of stress and monitor alcohol intake. However, the feasibility and keeping the price in check will also be big factors for the firm. And considering that Apple last year bifurcated its Watch family largely in two series – Watch 6 and Watch SE, we could see a premium one with all these features soon as and with basic ones as a part of the SE lineup
